Radon detector built with silicon alpha particle sensors
German title: | Mit Silizium-Alphapartikelsensoren aufgebauter Radondetektor
Acronym: | ALPIN | |
Duration: | 1st July 2018 - 31st December 2020
Description: | Existing soil probes for measuring radon concentration in soil air have low energy resolution and require frequent maintenance due to high humidity. They are not expandable to increase sensitivity, and their geometry is only conditionally adapted to the limited inner diameter of common boreholes. The newly developed radon sensor is segmentable and scalable. Compared to conventional hemispherical setups, the semi-cylindrical design of the radon measurement chambers offers the advantage of being particularly narrow and is therefore suitable as a ground probe. Thanks to high-resolution semiconductor sensors and integrated preamplifiers, the probe measures the radon concentration with high resolution. A heating, drying and pumping system was developed and integrated to prevent interference from humidity.
