Storing temporary surplus electricity from “green energies” is one of the great challenges of our century. Hydrogen is produced from these energies by electrolysis and stored in the existing infrastructure of gas pipelines and gas storage facilities. The HYPOS consortium is funded under the “Zwanzig20 – Partnerschaft für Innovation” funding initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. More than 120 companies, universities and research institutions are now involved in the implementation of this vision – with the CiS Research Institute.
Two projects are dedicated to the monitoring of electrolysers and storage systems on the one hand and on the other hand also include the development and demonstration of components for innovative process and safety sensor technology.
When exposed to hydrogen, many metals tend to become brittle and thus corrode. The CiS Research Institute is developing a hydrogen-resistant pressure sensor as part of a multi-sensor developed in the project consortium. In addition to the pressure, this sensor also records the temperature, residual gases and concentration of hydrogen in order to guarantee safe operation. Thus, the Forschungsinstitut contributes to a sustainable energy supply and the development of a hydrogen economy. The results of all 32 HYPOS research projects form an important building block for the implementation of the German National Hydrogen Strategy.
