An impression of the Summer School “Diamond Technologies and Applications 2017” in Elgersburg
Today diamond as a new material with unique properties can be produced technically and enables completely new components and sensors. Diamond coatings offer a wealth of extreme physical properties and can be used along specific value chains in microsystems technology, photonics, energy technology, medical technology, biochemistry and mechanical engineering, among others. Unfortunately, the knowledge about these new possibilities is not widespread and exactly this gap is to be closed by this event. With this guiding principle, the CiS Forschungsinstitut für Mikrosensorik GmbH organised a summer school in the “Hotel am Wald” in Elgersburg from 24 to 28 September 2017. Renowned experts in diamond research have taught a total of 11 lectures on synthetic diamond coatings to students, doctoral students, researchers and scientists.
On the one hand, these covered the basics of solid state physics and analysis of diamond layers. On the other hand, technologies for diamond growth and processing were considered and specific applications with synthetic diamond coatings were explained. These can be found in resistant protective layers, electrodes for electrochemistry, in window materials on the fusion reactor, in biochemical applications, in thermal management of optoelectronic components, in the correct determination of very small magnetic fields or in diamond detectors. Despite the wealth of information, the event enabled an intensive scientific and personal exchange between the participants and the lecturers. This was also made possible by the fact that the majority of the lecturers participated over the entire period. Due to the positive response to the event, the SMART DIAMOND Summer School “Diamond Technologies and Applications” will take place in Thuringia every two years.
